A new way to safely heat shrink insulation cable and generate heat in Ex/Atex zones. No need for hot work permit, no gas detection and no waiting. Just connect the heater and start working safely.

This product is founded on an improvement proposal from an employee in Statoil. The goal was to eliminate the explosion threat when heat shrink insulation sleeve offshore. Whenever a cable is installed or changed the sleeve needs to be preserved. This is done by applying heat to an insulation sleeve that surrounds the cable. Traditionally all air heaters uses air from the surrounding area and a standard heating element to apply heat to the heat shrink cable. This method can cause flammable gasses to enter the heating element and ignite.
Safety Tools has developed a tool that uses safe instrumental air or compressed air to safely generate enough temperature to heat shrink cable without any danger of igniting potential flammable gases.

Safetyheater function

The heater consists of a safety canister and a light handheld nozzle. Inside the safety canister there is a pressure tank that provide enough air to cool the heating element if loss of air. It uses safe air from a separate tank or “work air” to ensure that hazardous gases can’t enter through the safety canister. This in combination with several safety functions inside the canister ensures the heater to provide a safe, reliable and easy way to provide heat in an Ex/Atex zone(can be used in gas/hazardous zones).

The Safetyheater will have several areas of use. In addition to heat shrinking we are developing an insulation cover that can be attached to a pipe for “spot heating”. Our insulation cover can be connected to the Safetyheater and it will increase the temperature on the covered part of the pipe. This is made for the wrapping industry and will decrease the cure time when wrapping.

The current version of the Safetyheater is a functional prototype that we are testing and improving. Current test results are very promising and we are looking forward to present the final product.
